DEPRESSION

Feelings of depression are incredibly common. It?s twice as common in women, although women are more likely than men to be able to pull themselves out of depression over time. You can?t stop depression entirely. After all, life doesn?t always go smoothly, and there are going to be days when you won?t want to get out of bed in the morning.

Doctors have found that it?s often not the depression itself that?s the biggest problem but how you respond to it. By tackling depression head-on-by staying active, eating right, and doing your best to keep a positive mental attitude-it?s often possible to keep it under control or even prevent it entirely.

Get plenty of B vitamins. Researchers have found that people who don?t get enough B vitamins, especially vitamin B12 are particularly prone to depression. This can be a real problem in the elderly, since doctors estimate that about one in ten people over age sixty may have mood problems caused by low levels of this vital nutrient. The B vitamin helps your body metabolize amino acids, which can help increase the levels of the ?feel-good? chemicals in the brain.

You can get a lot of B vitamins simply by eating a well-rounded, nutritious diet that includes a lot of grains, fruits, and vegetables and that is low in sugars and fats. In addition, doctors often recommend taking a B-complex multivitamin, especially if you are age forty or older.

Take the herbal route. Researchers have now found that a number of herbs, such as St.John?s Wort (basant), chamomile (babunah), and kava, can help change your natural chemistry, making you less prone to depression. In fact, doctors have found that St.John?s Wort may be as effective as some prescription drugs for treating depression.

The easiest way to use herbs is to buy them in dried, bulk form at natural food stores and brew them up to make a tea. Herbal supplements are also very effective, although you?ll want to talk to your doctor to find out what dose will be most effective for you.

Be as active as possible. Regular exercise has been shown to be one of the most powerful anti-depression remedies there are. When you exercise, your body produces large amounts of endorphins, natural chemicals that relieve your feelings of sadness and boost feelings of comfort and well-being. It doesn?t take a lot of exercise to release these chemicals. Taking a walk several times a week, riding a bike, or swimming for twenty to thirty minutes may be all it takes to flood your body with these mood-lifters. Most people find that within a week or two of starting an exercise routine they feel happier and more energetic and sleep better.

Keep in touch with your friends. It?s hard to be social when you?re feeling down. But spending time with friends is one of the best ways to beat depression. Even if you?re just meeting people after work or going to the movies, regular social interactions will help you feel like you?re not alone, and this is crucial when you?re trying to beat the blues.

Write it down. Keeping a journal is an excellent way to stay in touch with your feelings. It can give you a better sense of things that are dragging you down-as well as lifting you up. Sometimes just expressing your emotions will help you feel a whole lot better.

Accept compromise. Many of the people who are depressed engage in what doctors call? ?all-or-nothing? thinking, believing that everything must go absolutely perfectly. This type of thinking can make you feel as though you?re always failing. It?s important to recognize that life is almost never all-or-nothing-that there are may shades of gray in everything we do. The more you put things in context, the less likely you?ll be to get depressed when things don?t go entirely your way. Of course, this is easy to say but some times hard to do.

Take inventory of the medicine chest. Many of the prescription drugs, including some that are taken for high blood pressure, glaucoma, and heart problems, can cause depression in some people. When your mood just doesn?t seem to be getting better, make a list of all the medications you?re taking and call your doctor. There may be a chemical reason that you?re feeling low, and changing medications may be all you need to improve your mood again.

???????????????????????????????????????? WHEN TO SEE THE DOCTOR

???

???????????????????? ??? Doctors divide depression into two main types. There?s ?normal

?????????????????? Depression, which is simply the blues we all get from time to time. More?

?????????????????? serious is ?clinical? depression, which can make you feel hopeless all the?

?????????????????? time. When your depression is severe and doesn?t go away-and you?re?

?????????????????? brooding, sleeping too much, bingeing on food, or generally having?

?????????????????? trouble coping-it?s essential to see a doctor right away. With a??

?????????????????? combination of therapy and new medications, depression is easier to treat??

Diabetes Insipidus - Prevention And Treatment

Diabetes insipidus, not to be confused with the more common diabetes mellitus, is a relatively rare disorder resulting from a failure to produce sufficient amounts of vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone (ADH).? Vasopressin, produced by the hypothalamus and secreted by the posterior pituitary gland, helps the kidneys to reabsorb water and maintain proper fluid balance. If the pituitary fails to produce enough ADH, water is not conserved bur simply passed through the kidneys and excreted, typically in very large quantities. More rarely, the kidneys fail to respond properly to ADH; this is known as nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Dehydration is the primary health risk associated with either form. Diabetes insipidus affects both sexes equally. With proper treatment, overall prognosis is good.

Prevention

There is no known way to prevent diabetes insipidus from the traditional standpoint.

The treatment

Combining conventional and alternative therapy is one of the surest way in prevention and treatment for diabetes insipidus.

  • Vasopressin (synthetic ADH) may be administered (either in a nasal spray, as a pill, or by injection) to replace or supplement the body?s ADH production. Such hormone therapy is usually necessary for a lifetime, although if diabetes insipidus is caused by a head injury or surgery, it may possible to discontinue treatment.
  • To treat nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, your doctor may advise a low salt diet to reduce thirst and slow the excretion of water. Certain diuretics may also be prescribed. (Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus does not respond to ADH treatment.)
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Consume plenty of high fiber foods and fruit juices to prevent or treat constipation.
  • Herbs bean tea, made up of kidney white navy, Lima, and northern beans, detoxifies the pancreas.
  • Bitter melon (Momordica charantia), gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre), and gulvel (Tinospora cordifo) are herbal remedies used in ayurvedic medicine to regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Cedars berries are excellent nourishment of the pancreas.
  • Dandelion root protects the liver, which converts nutrients into glucose. Note: if you suffer from gallbladder problems, avoid large quantities of dandelion.
  • Huckleberry helps to promote insulin production.
  • Other herbs that may be beneficial for diabetes include bilberry, buchu, dandelion root, and goldenseal and uva ursi. Caution: do not take goldenseal on a daily basis for more than one week at a time, and do not use it during pregnancy. If you have a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes or glaucoma, use it only under a doctor?s supervision.
  • All approach above is incomplete without this one. The best alternative diabetes insipidus ? prevention and treatment as provided by the ?one minute cure for all diseases? we all know that this prevention and treatment has gain publicity to a lot of people. The claim is so simple; study shows that if you deprive a cell 35% of its required levels of oxygen for 48 hours, the cell will become acidic and cancerous. Most people don’t know is that lack of oxygen is not only the underlying cause of cancer but is also the cause of most diseases. When the body is supplied with abundant amounts of oxygen, no cancer cells, viruses, harmful bacteria, toxins, pathogens and disease microorganisms can survive because they cannot survive in a highly oxygenated environment. We have to be aware that oxygen is the primary ingredient that our cells need when it comes to cell regeneration and this is very important in dealing diabetes insipidus at the cellular level.

What Are Eye Vitamins All About?

Eyes are a hot topic right now … From Lasik to Lutein it seems everywhere you look there is a new product or procedure touting vision enhancement.

Why? Partly because people are finally discovering that they can improve and preserve their eyesight naturally through good diet, supplements, preventative habits, and a disciplined eye exercise programs. More and more people are learning how to restore their vision naturally everyday.

But, with so many new supplements on the market claiming to enhance and improve vision, it can be downright confusing choosing which one is right for you.

1) Vitamin A

We all remember our mothers telling us to eat our carrots so we could have eyes like an eagle? But what do carrots really do for us?

Carrots contain a carotenoid called beta-carotene. Your body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A which is an anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants such as vitamin A are essential to eye health.

Did you catch all that? Here it is again in slow motion …

Carotenoids are pigments in plants and animals that provide red and yellow color. Beta-carotene is a carotenoid. It is contained in carrots and other various food sources. The body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A. Vitamin A is an anti-oxidant that is very important to the health of the eyes. An antioxidant is any substance that prevents or impedes cell oxidation (destruction) by free radicals. A deficiency in vitamin A can lead to many problems, but this typically is not an issue in the U.S., more so in developing countries.

Vitamin A:

helps your eyes adjust to light changes moistens the eyes, which can enhance visual acuity has been shown to prevent the forming of cataracts has been shown to help prevent blindness from macular degeneration - the leading cause of blindness in the world. The recommended daily allowance for those over 11 years old is 1,000 retinol equivalents (RE) for men, and 800 RE for women. An average-sized carrot contains almost 2,000 RE, a sweet potato contains around 2,600, a mango has about 400, and for those iron-stomachs who can handle a dose of liver - 11,000 RE!

2) Lutein

Lutein is another carotenoid that your body turns into an anti-oxidant. Lutein is the primary carotenoid located in the center of the retina, called the macula.

Six mg. of lutein has been shown to reduce the risk of macular degeneration by nearly 57%. A similar study showed that a diet low in lutein greatly increased the chance of developing cataracts. It benefits the overall health of the eye and has even been linked to reducing the hardening and narrowing of arteries.

There is currently no recommended daily allowance (RDA) for lutein, but the preventative effects stated above resulted from 6 mg. of lutein per day.

Lutein is found in food sources such as spinach, broccoli, and peas. One cup of raw spinach contains about 1.8 mg. of lutein, compared to 13.3 mg. contained in the same amount if it is cooked. One cup of cooked broccoli contains about 3 mg., and one cup of sliced green pepper contains around 1 mg.

With the busy lives we lead today, it is pretty hard to get 6 mg. per day from food sources, which is where a good supplement can come in.

3) Bilberry

Bilberries grow in the forest meadows of Europe, western Asia, and the northern Rocky Mountains. Bilberry is an herbal remedy that appears to have a very positive impact on vision. Its original use stems back to World War II when British pilots found that eating jam made from bilberries (a cousin to blueberries) helped to improve their night vision.

Researchers found that bilberry appear to fortify blood vessel walls, improving blood flow to the tiny blood vessels that keep eyes healthy and functioning properly, as well as to larger blood vessels that help maintain good circulation throughout the body. It also has been shown to help prevent macular degeneration and cataracts.

There is no RDA for this herb, but studies suggest that 80-160 mg. of the standardized extract is the amount needed to obtain the above-mentioned benefits.

4) Vitamin C

It seems vitamin C is an important anti-oxidant for just about everything these days - and it deserves mention in the benefits it has in protecting your eyesight.

Vitamin C has been linked to the prevention of cataracts, the delay of macular degeneration, and eye pressure reduction in glaucoma patients. Add all these benefits to the seemingly endless other benefits that vitamin C has been linked to for our overall health: it is a Vitamin you do not want to be without.

The U.S. RDA for vitamin C is 60 mg. for both men and women. It does not stay in the body very long so it needs to be constantly replenished to obtain the benefits. One orange contains about 70 mg. of vitamin C, one cup of strawberries about 80 mg., and one cup of sweet red pepper contains a whopping 283 mg.!

Unfortunately, Americans tend to be more reactive than proactive. We typically don’t start doing things that are helpful to our body until something goes wrong, at which time it is usually too late.

These four nutrients not only have preventative abilities, but I personally have found that there is a definite increase in my overall visual acuity when I am taking a good vision supplement that contains these four nutrients. Combined with the Rebuild Your Vision Program, my vision becomes much sharper - especially at night, and my eyes tend to have more endurance, not becoming tired at the end of a long day.

I would recommend looking for these four nutrients in a good daily supplement. If you take a daily supplement already, you may be covering the vitamins A and C requirements, but it is not likely to include lutein or bilberry.

Studies have shown that the more often you take a supplement in small doses, the more effective. That means it is better to take three 20 mg. doses of vitamin C than one 60 mg. dose. Your body absorbs and excretes many nutrients quickly, so smaller doses ensure a steady flow.

Question About Marijuana.?

I am curious to see if anyone has tried this. Can you make marijuana into some type of tea. The major problem most people tell me about are that it inhibits the brain (but so does alcohol and that is legal), and that it is bad for your health (which I do believe, but only because of the smoke). But that there are times when it can be good for your health (especially in glaucoma, though I hear it works for other diseases and pain).
I wonder then, if you make it into a tea (thus removing the smoke and therefore a major contributor to its health problems), does it still work for the other diseases and pain as it did when it was smoked? Does it still work on the brain like alcohol does when in tea form? And of course the most important question, can it be made into a tea (by running hot water through specially prepared leaves or leaf fragments from the marijuana plant)?

Any Quick Way To Lower Eye Pressure In Two Weeks?

So I have glaucoma and ive had it for a while now. i use drops (cosopt iopodine and travatan)..but ill be honest I do forget to take them alot. its not like i avoid them or anything i just forget sometimes. I am really worried because I have had surgery for my other eye (right eye …the left one is still kickin) and it not only wanders and looks weird but i cant even really see out (bleb possibly blocking it but doc doesnt want to take the risk of removing it or changing the wandering thing because of possible risk of infection and more problems) of it and im worried that ill have to have surgery for this one too. I have had a laser procedure in july and now have a doc appt in two weeks to see how it is going…if it didnt drop the pressure then i will probably have to go in for surgery. I know i miss eye drops sometimes but i usually am ok with it. I am just so worried about it tho. I dont want to not be able to see out of both eyes… i have no idea how i would do things (im in college and i have tonssss of homework on a regular basis).
Also three weeks after my laser thing in july … I had a syncope episode and broke my nose… the ent also found a tumor growing in between my eyes and stuff and it was close to all the nerves and brain and it was pressing on the nerves… i had it removed and im fine now… do you think that that could possibly have lowered the pressure? (i hope it did) …my eye doc does not know about the tumor thing yet but i will be sure to mention it to him on my appt.
I remember when i woke up after the removal of it .. it was like i could see tons better and smell alot better (but it kinda went away could have been the anthesia)
I just want to know is there any quick way to lower the pressure.
ex: double the eye drop doses … vitamins… diet… exercise… letting the peeps rest… idk.
much appreciated.
=)
(oh and sorry about telling so much i just wanted you guys to get the full story.)

Further, although the risk of seizure is present for all users of prescription drug Ultram, this risk may be significantly higher in those who have certain medical conditions. For that reason, it is important that you tell your doctor if you suffer from any of the following conditions: a history of drug abuse, epilepsy or seizure disorder, previous head injury, or a metabolic disorder.

Other disorders that may make prescription drug Ultram contraindicated include liver disease, kidney disease, any disorder of the stomach, or a history of mental of depression illness.

Pain is the bodys warning signal that something is wrong. If the pain is due to overuse or arthritis there are many things to consider. In all likelihood, one of the first things a person will reach for is an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines work by blocking the synthesis of cyclooxygenase, the enzyme responsible for the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. The two different pathways that are blocked are COX-1 and COX-2.

Despite the negative publicity surrounding COX-2 drugs, it is clear that all anti-inflammatory drugs have potential cardiovascular risks. These drugs also may inhibit bone and tendon healing. They may also block the absorption of nutrients… So the weekend warrior needs to take notice.

While hypnotherapy can give some control over the pain, many sufferers who have the disease have been harmed by abuse, and are very reluctant to lose any further control over their lives. Having bought into the popular notion that hypnotism is a lose of control to the will of the hypnotist, they must first overcome this powerful cultural and erroneous indoctrination they have bought into before they could ever use the therapy. Others with no such hang-ups will find it helpful. Learning meditation forms can also be helpful. A quite calm meditation music can be very helpful in clearing out the mind from worries and anxieties.

Belonging to a group and getting group support can be very helpful.

Fioricet (butalbital)

Fioricet is a combination drug. It is made up of acetaminophen, caffeine and butalbital. Acetaminophen is the same medication in Tylenol You know caffeine from coffee (or even your favorite candy bar.) Butalbital is a mild barbiturate. It relaxes you.

Medical Science does not have an explanation for the reason this combination of drugs works so well, but the fact is Fioricet (and its generic form butalbital) is highly effective for tension headache. Presumably, it relaxes the muscles in the head and neck which typically tighten during tension headaches.. This is the top selling drug at our pharmacy month after month- it really helps headaches!

Corticosteroids

Another group of medication used for rheumatoid arthritis treatment is corticosteroids. These drugs suppress the immune system, thus reducing inflammation.

Cortisone (Cortone), methylprednisolone (SoluMedrol, DepoMedrol), betamethasone (Celestone Soluspan), triamcinolone (Aristocort), dexamethasone (Decadron), prednisolone (Delta-Cortef), and prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), are some examples of corticosteroids.

Although corticosteroids can be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis, they are known to trigger adverse effects when used in extended periods of time. Some of these side effects include easy bruising, glaucoma, cataracts, thinning bones, and excessive weight gain, and diabetes. Because of their potential to develop severe side effects, these medications are often only used as a short-term remedy to manage sudden outbreaks of the disease. On the plus side, a single injection of the drug can inhabit inflammation of a specific joint for a long period of time.

Marijuana: America’s Miracle Solution?

I am a pro cannabis spokesman and would like to go over the pros in cons of legalizing marijuana. There are five main factors to recognize when considering the legalization of weed: Medicinal use, Economy, Crime rates, Risks of intoxication, and Religion. As we all know, marijuana has been legalized in California strictly for medicinal purposes. Marijuana is not only a painkiller but has also been proved to cure or reduce symptoms of many illnesses including but not limited to: nausea, vomiting, Depression, Bipolar disorders, PMS, unintentional weight loss, lack of appetite, spasticity, painful conditions, especially neurogenic pain, movement disorders, asthma, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Migraines, Fibromyalgia, Glaucoma, tourettes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADD, Cancer, AIDS, and much more. Also, cannabis DOES NOT KILL BRAIN CELLS! This is a common myth which resent studies have proven that it actually promotes neuron growth in the hippocampus section of the brain which is responsible for learning and memory. Neither does marijuana cause lung cancer. Researchers at Harvard University found that smoking pot actually decreases malignant transformation in cells leaving users at a lower risk of getting cancer. We can all agree that our economy is in dire need of a new industry. Not only will marijuana produce tax revenue through medicinal and recreational use, it will also decrease unemployment by opening new job opertunities for those who produce and use it. Also, did you know the hemp plant is a natural resource for biodeisel? Our current crops would take 10% of American land to produce enough fuel for the whole country on a consistant basis. It would only take 6% of the land with hemp as a substitute. There is the common misconception that legalizing marijuana would increase crime rate. In fact, marijuana would decrease the number of common civilians getting arrested providing more room in our jails for the real criminals. This will also allow authorities to focus on more serious crimes such as murder, cocaine trafficing, rape, and more. Legalization will not cause increase in domestic abuse and other falsely linked crimes as it will be no more available than it already is. Besides, have you ever known a violent pothead? If so, they probably had issues before they ever picked up a joint. Actually, studies have shown that marijuana can reduce anger problems, probably decreasing domestic violence in our country. I have already covered many risk concerns involving marijuana but I would like to focus on the most common “driving issue.” First of all, half of cannabis smokers are too paranoid to drive while intoxicated. Second, there are so few accidents involving people who are high that it can not be statistically linked to marijuana intoxication. Still, I stand strong on keeping it illegal to “smoke and drive.” Please, make good decisions and have a designated driver. The last subject I would like to touch on is religion. I myself am a Kantheist and believe hemp to be the tree of life. I base my beliefs on many advantages of smoking marijuana: healing abilities, the opening of the mind, and the spiritual closeness to God many feel while praying and worshiping while “high.” However, it is not whether or not such is true that is significant to legalizing cannabis. It is the fact that prohibition laws against marijuana go against the constituion’s first ammendment and opresses multiple branches of religion. There is the question,”What if a religion is based on killing people? Should we then legalize murder?” Of course not. That’s rediculous. Religous tolerance should be based on severity of the practice, and I must say that from smoking a joint to killing someone is a huge leap in severity. Smoking weed is beneficial. Murder hurts everyone involved. I encourage you all to make the smart decision to help in the legalization marijuana; for our health, our economy, and our future.

Trabeculectomy Eye Surgery

?

What Is Trabeculectomy ?

When glaucoma continues to progress despite the use of medication regimens and possibly laser treatments, a glaucoma filtration procedure (trabeculectomy) may be recommended. In general, a glaucoma filtration procedure is recommended when these other methods of glaucoma management have failed or have insufficiently controlled the progression of glaucoma…

?

The Procedure

Once the decision is made to proceed with a glaucoma filtration procedure, the surgery is scheduled. The procedure is completed in the operating room, usually under local anesthesia. Some ophthalmologists will complete the procedure under topical (eye drop) anesthesia. On the day of surgery, one should expect to have several eye drop medications applied multiple times to the eye for approximately one hour prior to the procedure…

?

Diagnosis/Preparation

The procedure is fully explained and any alternative methods to control intraocular pressure are discussed. Antiglaucoma drugs are prescribed before surgery. Added pressure on the eye caused from coughing or sneezing should be avoided. Several eye drops are applied immediately before surgery. The eye is sterilized, and the patient draped. A speculum is inserted to keep the eyelids apart during surgery…

?

After Your Operation

In most cases, a patch and shield will be placed over your eye on the day of surgery. This is usually removed later that day or the day after surgery and eye drop medications are begun. Your surgeon will usually want to evaluate your eye on the day of surgery or on the first post-operative day. At that time, depending on pressure in the eye, your surgeon might elect to cut sutures on the flap of the filter to modulate the filtration process. This is often done with a laser while in the office…

?

Alternatives

Physicians will first try to lower IOP with glaucoma medications. Several types of eye drops are effective for this use. Sometimes a patient must instill more than one eye drop, several times a day. Compliance is very important when using these eye drops; missed dosages will raise IOPs…

Allergies Aren’t Just in Your Head

Allergies are what you probably have if you? have a runny or congested nose and you sneeze often.? Don’t feel alone because millions of other people have this also.

The two forms of allergies are seasonal or perennial.? If you suffer seasonally you are allergic to the pollen in some plants.? This may come from when trees pollinate in the spring, grass in the late spring and early summer and also some grass in the late summer until the first hard frost.

A perennial allergy usually is caused by common allergens in molds, house dust, cats and horses. These cause what is called “hay fever.”?? But you don’t have a fever and it doesn’t come from hay. If you are allergic to any of those allergens or to smoke or pollution you may have “hay fever” all the time if you don’t do anything to get relief.

You have to avoid these allergens to get relief from your symptoms.? This can be very hard to do because most of these are in the air around us almost everywhere we go.? People who suffer seasonal type allergies get some help if they can stay inside with the windows shut during the pollen season.? Air conditioners help to filter out some of the pollen in the air.

Some people use antihistamines and decongestants to relieve their allergies.? But you have to be sure you do not overuse any of these.? If your stomach becomes upset when you take antihistamines you should try to take them with a light snack or with milk.

You shouldn’t take antihistamines if you have asthma, glaucoma, shortness of breath, chronic pulmonary disease or if you have an enlarged prostate that makes it difficult for you to urinate.

If you are using a decongestant spray do not use it for more than three days.? Using it longer than three days may actually make your congestion worse.? You shouldn’t use a decongestant if you have diabetes, thyroid disease, heart disease or an enlarged prostate.? Also do not use a decongestant spray if you are on medicine for depression or high blood pressure.

There are also some natural remedies that you can use to help your allergies but that is something that will be covered in a future article.? So for now just stay away from the pollens and dander that cause you so much misery.
