Glaucoma/ocular Migraines?

My optometrist screens me for glaucoma every year because she says that my optic nerves are swollen. She did laser surgery on my retina because of a tear. I had an ocular migraine the other day for the first time and am freaking out about it - I was almost totally blind for 30 minutes. Do you think there is a link between the retinal surgery, swollen optic nerves and ocular migraines? I have an appt. with opt. but not til Mon.

The Reality of Antioxidants and Aging

Would you like to slow down the aging process? Wouldn’t it be great if one of the anti-aging theories proved to be true? Has anyone actually found the Fountain of Youth? Well, research and studies have been conducted over and over again finding that antioxidants may work to slow down the aging process.

Here’s the good news about antioxidants and aging: antioxidants can actually help slow down the effects of aging. By taking in foods rich in antioxidants and a high-quality antioxidant supplement, you may experience certain health benefits such as boosting of the immune system and slowing down of the aging process in one’s skin, organs, and cells.

Antioxidants are naturally found in certain fruits and veggies. They have been proven to protect the human cells in the body from oxidative damage. They also provide a stronger resistance in the immune system for protection against flu, infections and viruses. Many of those consuming antioxidant-rich foods are those that have cancer. Another benefit is the reduction of cholesterol problems and heart disease. The risk of getting glaucoma and macular degeneration is nearly prevented. Of course, over all the body sees aging slowed down in every aspect.

Vitamins A, C and E are the main antioxidants found in natural food, as well as the minerals zinc, beta-carotene, selenium and all of the phytonutrient carotenoids. As we consume food and breathe oxygen, we suffer from more and more free radicals. The oxygen causes the free radicals to increase. As we get older, it is just harder and harder for our body to fight these free radicals. The free radicals multiply in our body and cause illnesses, disease and generally downgraded health. Antioxidants help to fight these free radicals, giving you a weapon to combat these free radicals from doing further damage to your body.

Antioxidants eliminate oxidation in people’s bodies by working in the organs, cells, skin and tissues. The more phytonutrient carotenoids that you have in your body, the healthier you will be.

The biggest problem is that people just do not consume enough fruits and vegetables to get the amount of antioxidants that they need. Choosing a high quality supplement with all of the antioxidants to take daily is vital to getting the amount of important nutrients that your body and cells need to slow down the aging process.

The main list of antioxidant rich fruits and veggies are: tomatoes, berries, oranges, pink grapefruit, beets, red peppers, carrots, apricots, plums, peaches, papaya, red grapes, broccoli, spinach, greens, and Brussels sprouts

You should aim to get as many of these foods in your daily diet as possible. If you struggle to do so, then consider taking a high-quality antioxidant supplement.

Can My Father Smoke Marijuana For Pain?

My question is regarding the dreaded marijuana cigarette. My dad is currently taking lortabs for the pain in his head. (He’s got a brain tumor, unfortunately.) He describes this pain as pressure, most notably behind his eyes. This sounds very much like the pain associated with glaucoma, which marijuana is known to ease. The lortab also has the effect of an appetite suppressant, which is none to good because he needs his strength for the road ahead. It is for these reasons that the use of marijuana sounds good, a nice alternative. Which brings me to my question, does anyone know of any link between raised insulin levels and the rate of tumor growth? Anyone know of any complications the use of marijuana could cause someone who is to undergo radiation treatment? A drug like dylantin and marijuana? High blood pressure and marijuana? Any help or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Apostle.

Myopia Or Short-Sightedness - A Common Problem Faced By Everyone

Myopia is a condition which is also known as short-sightedness and has been a problem area for many people. This kind of condition means that your capacity to see distant objects is not clear and appearing to be blurred. Your vision can be corrected by the use of glasses or contact lenses and also through laser eye surgery.

The eyesight gets blurred when the focus of the light is in front of the retina rather than on the retina. Some of the things that would irritate you are the blur images, headache and tired eyes. The symptoms of myopia may also vary from person to person. A doctor’s guidance is must when such matters come into light.

It usually starts during your childhood, getting worse by the time you are in your teens. This occurs when your eye is greater than the optical length creating the blurred image. History of myopia in the family also causes myopia or short-sightedness among children. The children are more likely to develop such problems due to the hereditary. This kind of condition does not create any problems to your health, but some may develop retinal degeneration.

Though there are not many problems with people suffering with myopia but in the later on stages of your life there are chances of developing glaucoma and other eye disorders. With regular check up one can avoid severe damage to your eye. Some other problems which cause myopia are due to lack of vitamins, improper reading habits and the condition running in the family.

The common treatment for myopia or short-sightedness is the use of glasses or contact lenses. It can be worn by anyone from a two-year-old to a 80-year-old. Even though glasses may not be that trendy, people choose to wear contact lenses. You can also get surgery done which include LASIK (Laser in-situ keratomileusis), Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and Radial keratotomy depending upon your individual needs.

Discover The Many Benefits Of Herbal Medicine

Today, it is no surprise to see everything labeled as natural or herbal. In just about any store you go in, all you see are millions of all herbal or all natural products including dietary supplements and herbal medicine products.

When did this tidal wave of herbal products start? One answer is that it all started when the media began to report widely on how important it is to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Knowledge of the benefits of herbal medicines and natural tonics goes back to our ancestors thousands of years in the past. All the way back to 2800 B.C., scientists and storytellers have reported on humans experiencing the amazing healing and health benefits of natural herbal remedies. And now it is your chance!

In fact, herbal medicine has been a big part of human history for the last 5,000 years according to archaeology and written records. All the way up to today, people have used herbal medicine and treatments to aid in a wide variety of ailments to improve their health and well being.

When NOT To Take Herbal Supplements And Herbal Medicine

Many herbs have a long history of beneficial use and practically guaranteed health benefits. An herb, or botanical, is either a plant or part of a plant (like the stem only) that is used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic abilities. Although they are found in natural, herbal products are not guaranteed to be safe or without negative side effects. While they may come from plants, some plants (like certain mushrooms) are dangerous and can be damaging or poisonous to your health, instead of restoring it.

Unlike prescription drugs, herbal products are not clinically tested and proven to work for any particular ailment before they are marketed or sold to customers in health food stores like GNC (General Nutrition Center).

Also, the active ingredients in many herbal supplements and treatments remain unknown. Some supplements have been found some to contain metals, prescription drugs mixed in without any mention on the label, microorganisms or other substances.

Since most herbal products are not tested and certified by the FDA or other health authority, they may in actual fact cause health problems or complications. All of this is extremely rare as most companies do their own testing, and only use the beneficial types of herbs in their herbal products. Still, it may not be smart to try herbal products, at least before talking about it with your doctor, if you have any of these medical problems:

- High blood pressure

- Thyroid condition

- Parkinsons disease

- Blood-clotting problems

- Diabetes

- Heart disease

- Epilepsy

- Depression or psychiatric problems

- Liver problems

- Enlarged prostrate gland

- Glaucoma

- History of stroke or organ transplant

If you are pregnant or nursing, then you should take special care about using herbal products, as well as if you are about to have surgery. Some herbal products such as for weight loss or skin care are much less expensive than surgical procedures like liposuction or hiring a dermatologist, respectively. This is one other reason for the massive popularity of herbal treatments. So to always be on the sage side of things, make sure you always check with your healthcare provider before trying any herbal products you have a concern about.

It is also a good idea to talk to your doctor before using an herbal product if you are now taking any medications for a health problem. Often, an herbal supplement will not interfere with a prescription medication or even an over-the-counter product but it is always best to check with your doctor first. Some active ingredients in herbal medicines are known to interact with medications in ways that may be able to cause risks to your health.

Some benefits from herbal treatments and alternatives available on the market include but are not limited to:

1. Cost-effectiveness: Prescription drugs cost much more money than herbal medicines.

2. Lower Side Effects: Herbal medicines are generally a far healthier solution than prescription drugs due to potential harmful side effects caused by unpredicted body chemistry interactions. However as mentioned above, its important to remember that just because the word natural is included herbal medicines does not guarantee safety.

However, herbal medicines appear to have many advantages over traditional drugs, including a lower occurrence of side effects.

3. Effectiveness and Potency: Poor results with traditional drug treatments often makes people search for alternative treatments. Keep in mind, however, the potential of herbal medicines is different for everybody.

Genetics change from person to person, which affects how the ingredients work over time. Also a factor in the potency of an herb is the process and timing of harvest, as well as exposure to air and light

Ultimately, herbal medicine and herbal treatments have both weak and strong points. Keep in mind that herbal medicines are not a guaranteed and final solution to any health problem, but instead are generally effective at healing a health problem as well as being a wallet friendly solution.
