New Surgery Technique Helps to Save Vision From Glaucoma

Every year, thousands of people are blinded by Glaucoma. Now, a newly discovered laser technique gives glaucoma sufferers great hope that the progression of their disease can be brought to a halt.

Glaucoma is often called an aging related disease because it often, but not always, manifests itself after the age of 40. It is also referred to as the silent thief of sight because it usually has no early symptoms. Typically, the onset of glaucoma is discovered when your eye doctor gives your eye a pressure screening. Eyes that are at risk for glaucoma will have higher than normal pressure in their eyeballs. If this pressure remains too high for too long a period, it can damage the optic nerve.

In a normal, healthy eye, aqueous humor is continuously produced. It is then drained through something called the trabecular meshwork, which is a collection of tissues in the eye located around the base of the cornea. The aqueous humor drainage takes place at the same rate as it was produced.

As the eye ages, however, this trabecular meshwork may become clogged, thus preventing the necessary drainage from taking place. it this happens, the pressure on the optic nerves will continue to build up, potentially to an unhealthy level. High enough pressure will damage the optical nerves resulting in glaucoma.

Therefore, any glaucoma treatment has to be targeted towards either reducing the pressure on the nerve or reducing the amount of aqueous humor produced in the eye, or both. The goal of reducing eye pressure is usually attained with topical eyedrops or oral medications. If these treatments are ineffective, your doctor may recommend surgery to prevent further vision loss.

A very popular laser surgery technique used for the treatment of glaucoma is called laser trabeculoplasty. This technique uses a highly focused laser beam to cut through the whites of your eye and burn off part of the trabecular meshwork beneath it. This causes the remainder of the trabecular meshwork to expand, in effect, making it less dense and more permeable. The net result it that the aqueous humor can now more easily drain from the eye, thus relieving the pressure.

In the best cases this will manage to stop the damage and save your current vision. In the worst cases you may develop cataracts and possibly lose your sight.

As you might imagine, this is a very delicate operation. So delicate in fact that there are very few surgeons in the world that can adequately perform the operation. At least that was true before the Israeli company IOPtima developed a new breakthrough laser technology that promises to make the entire process so easy that it can be performed by most eye surgeons around the world.

The breakthrough device is called the OT134. It’s a laser and it’s based on carbon dioxide laser technology, a technology commonly used in skin resurfacing. One advantage of a carbon dioxide laser is that it minimizes bleeding to a greater degree than other types of lasers. It’s intensely focused heat immediately cauterizes the wounds as it creates them.

In addition, with the IOPtima laser, it automatically switches off just before the eye membrane is perforated - at exactly the same time when the liquid is able to pass through the membrane, but when the membrane is thick enough to keep the eye protected. Performing this procedure manually is so difficult that most surgeons will not chance performing it. The IOPtima, however, relieves the surgeon from having to perform it, by performing all of the necessary intricate steps itself. This is what makes the laser revolutionary.

According to IOPtima, it’s lasers will “make it possible for eye-surgeons everywhere to become instant experts in a surgical technique that was once performed by a select few.” If they’re right, millions of glaucoma sufferers will be forever grateful.

Recommend A Heart Attack/stroke Prevention/remedy And A Heart Specialist In Arizona.?

my short story…..
maternal family history….diabetes, cancers of many sorts(young siblings n old relatives), glaucoma, weak kidney, extreme ecxema, n a few other things.
paternal history…possible digestion problems bc some have acne/skin problems. dad finally died of a heart attack, his sisters/siblings/cousins died of the same thing.
they were all young, dad was only 42.
my sister is 47 n has had congenital heart disease for years. she is in a wheelchair, on oxygen, n got a defibrillator implant last year.
over the last few years i have had off and on high blood pressure. it was minor and i did not always need medication. i have had small symptoms of heart trouble for about 10 years. it never prevented me from doing anything and no doctor gave me any medications. about 10 years ago i noticed shortness of breath w the stair climbing, so i lost weight to accomodate. i have an extremely small frame so i went from what looked like average to skinny. that helped a lot. i did not associate the shortness of breath w anything else. there were bouts w stress and i lived in a house that poisoned me w various pollutions. the gase hot water heater was never properly hooked up and the vents were never properly cleaned. i breathed that for almost 15 years before i figured it out. i am sure that had something to do w my deterioration.
early last year i had strange things like small tightness in the jaw joint from time to time and the throat closing like a suffication/choking. i had to concentrate to squeeze down air. i never knew how to quite explain that but the doctors dismissed it. once i was eating and suddenly could not swallow no matter how hard i concentrated.
last year i went to a heart specialist w pain in my left arm. the office was horrible. they depended solely on a stress test but they could nt get the wires hooked up right. plus some girl was in training and did not know what she was doing. the supervisor came in to help but she was no better. when the visit was over i was upset because they told me nothing was wrong. just come back next year. i tried to convince them otherwise but i did not do a good job. i did not think to go to another specialist. months went by. eventually i walked down my hallway and suddenly out of the blue felt nauseous then faint. i did not faint, but since i did not know what it was i was puzzled with the episode.
about june i started to have serious shortness of breath and problems w high blood pressure. my doctor left the country and i did not find a replacement. i had daily headaches n it seems that i had them so bad it could have been a small stroke. maybe i am paranoid, but something did go wrong. the doctors have no idea what i describe to them. i am gettting upset just thinking about it but no one took this seriously so i trusted them and thought i was in better shape than i really was.
with horrific stress, divorce, job problems, financial difficulty (the usual stress killers), etc. i find that i have symptoms that i have never encountered before. pressure/light tightness from head to toe on the left side. turned to burning on the left side. flushed cheeks. dull tingling/numbness of the lower face/tongue/lips, dizziness and uncontrolled hbp. the numbers range from the low 100’s to 160+. before it was far over that. when all this started the numbers were only about 125 and i thought that was horrible. it changes from minute to minute even with a stronger medication. the dull pain in my arm moved up to near my armpit then it moved to the left side of my upper chest. i try to keep it as low as possible by drinking hot tea or soup. it drops a few points (ie: from 160 to 140) but i can not seem to keep it under 140. excercise does not seem to help. my heart pounds excessively and has done so for about 4 months. it does not matter if the pressure rate is down or not.
all i take is hbp medicine and vitamins one time each day. i saw a new heart specialist who is just having me wait for testing. while i wait, i made an appointment w a 3rd heart specialist. in the meantime i asked my existing doctor (2nd) what can be done n i was told to go the ER. no thanks. the bill used to be only 50.00 for ER but now the visits are now close to 1k with insurance. the health care system i am in told me that the doctors don’t contract with them anymore. after insurance, i still have a large bill.
so here i am asking you what i can do to keep my hbp under control and to prevent a heart attack and stroke. i am about 50 years old, female, over 5feet 7inches tall, small/skinny frame and i could not take any more medical/financial trauma. i never smoked/drank or did drugs but i find myself taking tylenol every day for the headaches. i never like junk food. as a baby my favorite foods were vegetables. i dont eat a perfect diet becasue of the high food prices. my kitchen has poultry, canned leafy greens, canned beans, canned tuna, canned beets, rice, dried

What Are Your Thoughts On Medicinal Marijuana Use?

I work in the medical field. I have seen many patients who admit to using marijuana for pain management, loss of appetite, glaucoma, anxiety and migrane headaches. Many practices will dismiss the patient for drug use. All have said they would rather use marijuana, than a synthetic drug that can cause major side effects. On the other hand, it is an illegal substance. It has been considered a “gateway drug”. Should it be legalized? Should the patient have a right to decide if he/she can use marijuana for medicinal purposes? What are your thoughts?

Lasik and Glaucoma

About 3 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with glaucoma. Glaucoma is a visual condition that causes damage to the optic nerve due to increased internal ocular pressure (IOP). Generally, patients with glaucoma feel no symptoms until they begin to notice vision changes.

A clear watery liquid called the aqueous humor baths the lens and cornea of our eyes. This liquid flows in and out of the area behind the cornea and in front of the iris, (called the anterior chamber) nourishing the structures inside the eye. When a patient has glaucoma, this fluid does not drain quickly enough out of the anterior chamber. Soon, fluid builds up, and the internal ocular pressure inside the eye increases. Left untreated, this increased pressure causes damage to the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness.

Glaucoma is diagnosed with a thorough eye examination that measures eye pressure and includes a visual examination of the optic nerve and a visual field test. This complete examination measures whether loss of vision has begun.

Glaucoma is treated with medicated eye drops, conventional surgery and/or laser surgery.

Risk factors for glaucoma include:

? family history of glaucoma

? Negro ancestry

? high blood pressure

? diabetes

? smoking

? advanced age

? corticosteroid use

? previous ocular trauma

For an individuals considering LASIK surgery to correct any of a number of common vision problems, glaucoma poses some unique problems. Individuals with very high IOP or individuals at risk for glaucoma may not be good candidates for conventional or custom wavefront LASIK, All-Laser LASIK, or Epi-Lasik. However, other types of refractive surgery like PRK, LASEK, NearVision CK, P-IOL, or RLE may be more appropriate.

Some types of LASIK surgery involve the use of a microkeratome, a mechanical or laser surgical device used to create a flap of corneal tissue. Attached temporarily to the eye with a vacuum ring that creates suction, the microkeratome briefly but greatly increases the internal ocular pressure of the eye, negatively affecting the patient who has elevated IOP.

The Sacramento LASIK physicians of Griffin and Reed Eye Care insist on using the German engineered Hansatome Microkeratome instrument to create the corneal flap for the LASIK treatment. As a leading provider of LASIK procedures, Griffin and Reed Eye Care puts the needs of Sacramento LASIK patients at the forefront in selecting the very best, most technologically advanced equipment and procedures for every Sacramento LASIK treatment.

It?s important to note that, while glaucoma does not automatically mean refractive surgery is not possible, the individual?s glaucoma should be treated and the condition must be stable before refractive surgery can be undertaken.

PRK, LASEK, CK, P-IOL, and RLE are types of LASIK surgery that do not require a microkeratome and have not been shown to dramatically increase IOP. Discuss these options with your eye surgeon to determine if any one of these procedures is right for you.

If you are ready to choose an eye care professional to be evaluated for any type of refractive surgery procedure, it is highly recommend that you consider a physician who has been evaluated and certified by the USAEyes nonprofit organization. USAEyes provides objective Lasik information and lists Lasik doctors who meet specific patient outcome requirements and are certified by the nonprofit, nongovernmental, Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance.

The Federal Drug Administration offers an approved online glaucoma test you can take from the comfort and convenience of your own computer to help you determine if you have or are at risk for glaucoma. Visit the FDA?s online test, which may be helpful, but should not be used in place of a visit to your ophthalmologist at least once every other year.
